After a more than disappointing start to the season, the Tigers registered their first win at a 20/20 competition being held in Edogawa, Tokyo. The victory tasted all the more sweeter as it was achived with many of their regulars missing from the lineup.
On a sunny and breezy day at the Edogawa ground, Tiger's captain Sakthi won the toss and decided to take first strike. After an initial hiccup in the form of a runout of opener Muralidhar, the consistent Anil N.T and the effervescent Mithun settled in. Mithun who was promoted up in the batting order, a brilliant move from the captain, started solidly. At the other end, Anil the veteran, sussed out the situation perfectly and began to up the ante with some splendid shots. Mithun showed great temperament in trying to bat till the end and played some magnificient shots all around the ground. With more than a useful support from the middle order, Tigers closed their innings at 163/5 after their quota of 20 overs.
Playing against Foley's for the first time, Tiger's had little knowledge about their strengths and weaknesses. Sulaiman and Gavin opened their innings and the fiery Abhishek started the proceedings for Tigers. Of the second ball of their innings, Abhishek produced a lethal beauty, which cleaned up Sulaiman. Moore joined Gavin and the two of them struggled for survival in the face of an hostile spell from Abhishek. Soman from the other end lacked rythm in his bowling and conceded a number of wides which did provide some relief to Foley's. Mithun replaced Soman and and started bowling well though not at full tilt. May be the long innings while batting might have taken its toll. Gokulan replaced Abhishek, a good move from Captain, but unfortunately, he struggled to find the correct line and length. Gavin relieved to see Abhishek off, carted Gokulan around, a stunning straight six being the shot of the day. Tigers gradually started to loose control over proceedings and Foley's were in a strong position at the completion of 8 overs with 66 runs on the board and 9 wkts remaining. Murali started his spell with a brilliant over, with Moore struggling to pick gaps. Gijo who replaced Mithun, produced an excellent first ball yorker for which Moore had no answer.
For Tigers to have any hopes of coming back, had to take out Gavin who was batting serenely with some lovely shots all around the ground. Gijo, in an inspired move, moved Soman to deep fine leg from the square leg fence, and bowled a short ball which Gavin pulled straight to Soman. Under pressure, the cool Soman made no mistake, and the match turned on its head. Murali continued his fantastic economic spell and Abhishek returned to torment the Foley's once again, with Chris being at the wrong end of Abhishek's fury, being nastly hit on the chin and had to retire hurt with blood all over his attire.
Finally, Foley's innings ended 22 runs short of the target at 141/3 after 20 overs. The Tigers rejoiced with every one in a huddle cheering their first win.
There were murmurs floating around from a group of passionate Tiger's supporters that if 2-3 more seniors are replaced with young talent, Tigers will be unbeatable!!!!!
